Ryan Giggs has told Marcus Rashford he is still capable of ‘playing for any team’ in the world after naming him among four players who have ‘no way back’ at Manchester United this summer.

Rashford was frozen out of the first-team picture by Ruben Amorim at the end of last year, joining Aston Villa on loan during the January transfer window.

Under Unai Emery at Villa Park, the England international has shown flashes of his once fearsome form, scoring four goals and laying on six assists in 21 appearances.

A hamstring injury appears to have ended his season prematurely but Emery is thought to be keen to sign the forward on a permanent basis this summer. The loan deal that took Rashford to the Midlands includes an option to buy for £40million.

A return to Old Trafford is seemingly off the table for now, but Rashford’s preference is to join Barcelona this summer rather than stay at Villa.

The 27-year-old is ready to take a pay cut to make a dream move to the Camp Nou happen with Barcelona themselves now keen to make it happen.

United hope to raise cash through sales this summer with Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, on loan at Chelsea, Real Betis and PSV Eindhoven respectively, among those they are looking to offload.

United legend Giggs appeared on the Webby & O’Neill show to discuss United’s summer transfer business, naming Rashford as one of four players who are likely to be moved on.

And when asked if Rashford still has the required quality to play for Barcelona and star alongside the likes of Lamine Yamal, the Welshman said: ‘Marcus can play in any team. he has shown the quality he has got.

‘For some reason it just hasn’t happened the last few years at United. When I was playing my best football it was because I was free, I was expressing myself, enjoying myself. It didn’t look like that when Marcus was here. He needs to find a place where he was loved and can reach the levels he is capable of.’

With Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans expected to leave at the end of their respective contracts, Rashford, Sancho, Antony and Malacia represent United’s best hopes for raising funds.

While admitting Rashford’s departure leaves a ‘sour taste’, Giggs admits he cannot see a way back for that quartet.

Asked if United should be selling Rashford, Sancho, Antony and Malacia, Giggs said: ‘ think that’s down to Amorim.

‘I think he’s already made up his own mind and it might have even been taking out of his own hands by the power that be to bring money in to get his kind of player in.

‘Marcus leaves a little bit of a sour taste, he is one of our own, he’s come through, he’s done so well when he was first in the team.

‘But he didn’t look happy, he looks under pressure and not enjoying his football. So for Marcus’ sake, and you can see him enjoying his football now, I don’t see a way back for any of them.’
