Despite winning the Super Bowl on the back of their vaunted defence, the Philadelphia Eagles are making some big changes on that side of the ball.
The defending champions are trading safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for guard Kenyon Green, according to multiple reports.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal includes a pick swap, with the Eagles acquiring a 2026 fifth-rounder while the Texans get a 2026 sixth-rounder.
Gardner-Johnson is the sixth defensive piece parting ways with the Eagles in the opening days of the NFL’s legal tampering period, after they lost Josh Sweat, Milton Williams and Isaiah Rodgers to free agency and are expected to cut Darius Slay and James Bradberry.
Gardner-Johnson made a big return from injury in 2024 after only suiting up for three games in 2023. He tied his career-high with six interceptions and allowed a 62.2 completion percentage over 16 games.
This is the third time the 27-year-old has been traded in his six-year career. He was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round, 105th overall, at the 2019 NFL Draft.
Green, meanwhile, made 12 appearances for the Texans last season after missing the entirety of the 2023 season with an injured shoulder.
Houston struggled with pass protection in 2024, allowing 54 sacks — the fourth most in the NFL — but Green will now join one of the best units in the league with the Eagles, who leaned on their line and run game as part of their Super Bowl run.
The 23-year-old was selected by the Texans 15th overall at the 2022 Draft out of Texas A&M.
The Texans have also re-arranged their offensive line this off-season, trading away five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil and cutting two-time Super Bowl champ Shaq Mason.
