The next wave of Boston Red Sox talent has officially arrived.
According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Kristian Campbell — the No. 4 prospect in baseball, per Baseball America — has been informed that he has made Boston’s opening-day roster.
Campbell broke out in 2024, winning MLB Pipeline Hitting Prospect of the Year and the double-A Eastern League MVP in his first full professional season.
The 22-year-old slashed .330/.439/.558 with 20 home runs and 24 stolen bases while suiting up in 115 games across three levels. He ended the season with a 19-game cameo at triple-A.
Boston selected Campell as a compensation pick after the fourth round of the 2023 draft out of Georgia Tech.
Since making his pro debut, the right-handed-swinging Campbell has spent time at every defensive position other than first base, catcher and pitcher. However, he is expected to play second for the Red Sox this season.
There had been much made of how Boston would roll out its lineup after signing Alex Bregman this off-season, but after Rafael Devers relented on his desires to play third base, everything fell in place for Campbell to earn a spot on the big-league team.
It is expected that Bregman will play third and Devers will serve as the Red Sox’s designated hitter.
Campbell cracks the roster despite struggling through spring training. He picked up just eight hits in 48 at-bats, striking out 18 times.
Boston also features two other top-20 prospects, per Baseball America, in outfielder Roman Anthony and shortstops Marcelo Mayer, who are expected to begin the season at triple-A.
