The Red Sox recalled the Longueuil, Que., utility man on Saturday while placing first baseman Tristan Casas on the 10-day injured list with a left patellar tendon rupture.
Toro, 28, has spent parts of the past six seasons in MLB with the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics.
In 94 games last year with the A’s, the utility man batted .240 with six home runs and 26 RBIs while appearing at first base, second base, third base, left field and designated hitter.
Toro batted .310 (31-for-100) with seven doubles, two triples and two home runs with triple-A Worcester this season.
Casas, 25, was carted off in the second inning of Friday’s game against the Minnesota Twins due to a left knee injury.
Casas fell as he was attempting to leg out an infield hit that starter Joe Ryan bobbled before his under-hand throw to first baseman Ty France. Replays showed that Casas collided with France and the atmosphere in the Red Sox dugout mimicked the eerie calm that fell over the entire ballpark once Casas went down and didn’t get up immediately.
He entered the game hitting .184 with three home runs in 28 games. Romy Gonzalez replaced him in the lineup Friday and doubled in a run during the eighth inning.
Meanwhile, Boston also reinstated Brennan Bernardino from the bereavement list and optioned fellow reliever Luis Guerrero to triple-A.
