After 14 minutes of the Clasico on Sunday, Real Madrid fans were daring to dream of an improbable La Liga title.

A Kylian Mbappe brace gave Madrid a 2-0 lead with a quarter of an hour on the clock away to their arch-rivals.

Barcelona had been eliminated from the Champions League a few days earlier and now it looked like they were about to let Madrid back into the title race.

Had the Blancos held on for a victory, they would have moved to within a point of Barcelona at the summit of the standings. Hansi Flick’s side would doubtless have got very jittery at that point, especially given Barca have the tougher run-in.

Yet Madrid were not able to hold on – not even until half-time. They found themselves 4-2 down at the interval after a remarkable turnaround from Barcelona. 

Mbappe completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute and his team had opportunities to equalise, but even the most one-eyed Madristra would struggle to argue against the notion that Barcelona were the better team on the day.

Not just on the day either. Barcelona have been superior over the course of the season. Despite the addition of Mbappe, who has had an excellent individual campaign, Madrid have gone backwards compared to last term.

The title race is not yet mathematically over, with Madrid seven points behind Barcelona with nine more up for grabs.

The champions-elect are in action 24 hours after Madrid, but Barca will be crowned champions without playing unless Madrid beat Mallorca on Wednesday.

It will be hard for Carlo Ancelotti’s players to pick themselves up after the Clasico disappointment, but they must try to keep pushing until the end.

Barcelona will win the title this year, but it would be a much better look if Madrid finished within five or six points of Flick’s side rather than 11 or 12.

On top of that, the Blancos are only five points clear of third-placed Atletico Madrid, who would love the chance to overtake their cross-city rivals.

It has now been confirmed that Carlo Ancelotti will leave the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the month. He will not want to do so on the back of a third-place finish.

Mallorca are a tricky team to play against. They have not lost any of their last 12 league games by more than a single goal.

Madrid might have to settle for a slender victory in this one.

Real Madrid have had misfortune with defensive injuries throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

Against Barcelona they had to line up with a heavily improvised back four comprising Lucas Vazquez, Aurélien Tchouameni, Raul Asencio and Fran Garcia.

The defensive line will be even weaker on Wednesday after Vazquez picked up an injury in the Clasico. It looks like the youngster Jacobo Ramon will feature at centre-half, with Fede Valverde deputising at right-back once more.
