For a long time, Bayern Munich took the Bundesliga title for granted.

Between 2013 and 2023, Bayern finished top of the German first division every year. The Champions League rather than the Bundesliga determined whether or not a season was deemed successful.

Until last year, that is. Bayer Leverkusen went 34 games unbeaten in 2023/24 to steal the title away from the Bavarians. It was a stunning achievement from Xabi Alonso’s crew.

All of a sudden, the title was no longer a given for Bayern. Their budget may dwarf that of Leverkusen (as well as RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and the rest), but a third-place finish last season humbled Bayern.

Despite links with Real Madrid and Liverpool, Alonso opted to stay at the BayArena for one more season. Leverkusen also succeeded in keeping their squad together, with the club targeting a second title and a run to the latter stages of the Champions League.

In the end, Leverkusen have managed neither – all because of Bayern. Vincent Kompany’s team beat them 5-0 on aggregate in the last 16 of the Champions League, while they lead Leverkusen by eight points in the Bundesliga with three games left.

In a way, Kompany is fortunate that Bayern crashed and burned in the Bundesliga last season. Had they won the title under Thomas Tuchel in 2023/24, there would currently be more scrutiny of Bayern’s failure to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League this campaign.

As it is, regaining the title from Leverkusen is enough to make Kompany’s debut season a qualified success. Bayern are not over the line yet, but one more win would do it. In fact, a draw would probably be sufficient given Bayern’s goal difference is vastly superior to Leverkusen’s.

More will be expected next term. Alonso looks set to leave Leverkusen this summer, so Bayern will be even stronger favourites to win the title. If Kompany is to win over the remaining doubters, he and his team must do better in the Champions League.

For now, though, Bayern’s imminent title triumph is worth celebrating. 

There is no doubt they have been the best and most consistent team in the league. Bayern and Leverkusen have each lost two games, but the former have four more wins to their name. That has made the difference.

RB Leipzig’s season is not done yet. They are fifth at present, two points shy of the top four. 

Eintracht Frankfurt are well positioned to qualify for the Champions League along with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, so it looks like the Bundesliga’s last spot will go to one of Freiburg, Leipzig or Borussia Dortmund.

Leipzig would rather be facing anyone but Bayern given their need for points. Zsolt Low’s team are capable of giving the champions-elect a game, but they will probably fall just short.

Bayern will be keen to wrap up the title this weekend, allowing them the maximum time for celebration.

Leipzig can find the back of the net on Saturday, but Bayern should emerge victorious.

Having famously never won a trophy before, Harry Kane would have been desperate to lead Bayern Munich to a title-clinching victory on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the England international, he will miss Saturday’s match through suspension.

That boosts RB Leipzig’s chances of getting something from the match, although it also gives an opportunity for other Bayern attackers to step up.

Michael Olise is the best pick in this market. The former Crystal Palace wide man has had a fine debut season at the Allianz Arena and he is just one goal shy of reaching double figures in the Bundesliga.
