Radical Cup overrun with Primal entries for Barber

This weekend Radical Cup joins the NTT IndyCar Series for the first of three times this year at Barber Motorsports Park for the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix, May 1-4. The chance to star alongside IndyCar has prompted a number of regional racers from the Primal Racing stable join the series, along with UK Radical star Andy Lowe.

“Four nationalities will be represented this weekend– Great Britain, China, Canada and the United States– which is just one indicator of a high caliber field,” said Radical’s Tom Drewer. “We have a solid mix of young racers and seasoned veterans, with Primal’s Raiden Nicol in the Pro 1500 class looking especially strong this season, while this weekend sees the return of reigning Platinum champ Jon Field.”

Including Field, the former American Le Mans Series champ who will drive the No.37 entry alongside ONE Motorsports teammates Chip Romer and Wayne Williams, nine drivers will compete in the Platinum class. JBR is also fielding a trio of talent – Scott Wagner, Louis Schriber, and David Alban – while Group-A Racing’s Steve Jenks and Team Stradale’s Ben Blander already proved at Sebring that they will also be in the running for the championship. Rookie James Long will represent PRIMAL Racing in the Platinum ranks, just one of five entries from the Atlanta Motorsports Park based outfit.

The four other PRIMAL Racing drivers are competing in the Pro 1500 class, which sees 15 total entries. Sebring standout Raiden Nicol, who has three wins to his name to not only lead the class points, but the outright standings too, is being joined by Luke Kendall, and Gold class drivers Chris Huhn and David Mason. The latter has committed to a number of Radical Cup rounds this year after stepping up from AMP club competition which he’s been participating in since 2022.

Competition in the Gold class for drivers over 30 is further boosted this weekend with the North American debut of Fine Cut Radical Cup UK regular Andy Lowe with JBR motorsport. Lowe also has Gulf Radical Cup starts to his name, along with a solid run in the 2024 Kinetic Radical World Finals at Yas Marina. JBR teammate Richard Durocher will be another one to watch in the Gold class, as will Dennis Kelly (Group-A), RYNO Racing’s Mike Anzaldi and points leader Jack Yang (Valour).

While you can expect all Gold class drivers to fight for the outright podium, the going will be tough at Barber with a number of young guns also looking to knock Nicol off the top step. Spencer Schmidt (Graham Rahal Performance), Austin Riley (Racing with Autism), Matthew Romer (son of Platinum driver Chip Romer) all aim to make an impact in the competitive Pro 1500 field, as will Cameron Racing / Radical Northwest’s rookies Ryan Persing and Valen Venkatesh, who is joined by his older brother Arul.

Another three rookies can be found in the Pro 1340 class in Alabama. Proper Performance’s Vaughn Glace is making his series debut, while Dermot Ennis will attempt to reign in Canadian Brady Clapham, the class points leader. Graham Rahal Performance driver Kenny Naill is the sole non-rookie in the field and another to keep an eye on.

“Barber always delivers exciting racing, and this could be the start of any competitor’s march toward the 2025 title,” Drewer said.
