While the PS5 is a great console overall, it isn’t without its flaws. A report from 2023 claimed original PS5s were at risk of being damaged if placed vertically. Specifically, it was feared that liquid metal could potentially spill. Today, Sony confirmed that it has improved the liquid metal cooling technology in the PS5 Pro.
Liquid metal was “crucial” for PS5 Pro’s design
In a recent PlayStation Blog post, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida and PS5 Pro Electrical Design Lead Shinya Hiromitsu did a teardown of the enhanced console. They explained the reasoning behind its design and how they improved on the original console. One of the facets they discussed was the use of liquid metal for cooling. While it is similar to how it was integrated in the original PS5, the design team made some improvements to the technology.
“We spent quite some time conducting research on insulation when we were designing the original PS5,” says Tsuchida. “The basic structure remains the same in the PS5 Pro, but we made some improvements by adding fine grooves where the liquid metal is applied, so that the cooling effect is more stable. When we were doing research for the original PS5, we anticipated that semiconductors would continue to advance and become much denser, so we believed liquid metal technology would become crucial. It turns out we were right, and it was integral when designing the PS5 Pro.”
The PS5 Pro deep dive into its tech shows other ways it improves on the design of the original. This includes adding more heat pipes to the heat sink, adopting Wi-Fi 7, its new fan, and much more. PlayStation fans interested can check out the entire interview here.
The PS5 Pro is available to purchase now. Several games have specific enhancements that utilize the improved hardware. This includes better performance and visuals thanks to its AI upscaling technology, PSSR.
