Poll finds Trump's approval rating below 50% in every 2024 swing state

(NEXSTAR) – As the Trump administration celebrates its first 100 days, polls show Americans are increasingly dissatisfied with the president's second term, even in the same swing states that vaulted him into the White House.

In honor of the day, President Trump is holding rally Tuesday in Michigan, one of the vital toss-up states Trump won handily against former Vice President Kamala Harris. Michigan has been especially rocked by his steep trade tariffs and combative attitude toward Canada.

Michigan's unemployment rate has risen for three straight months, including jumping 1.3% from March to reach 5.5%, according to state data. That’s among the highest in the nation, far exceeding the national average of 4.2%.

Automaker Stellantis halted production at plants in Canada and Mexico after Trump announced a 25% tariff on imported vehicles, temporarily laying off 900 U.S. employees. Industry groups have separately urged the White House to scrap plans for tariffs on imported auto parts, warning that doing so would raise prices on cars and could trigger “layoffs and bankruptcy.”

On Tuesday morning, press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that the administration would dial back some of Trump's tariffs on cars and auto parts to relieve U.S. automakers.

An online poll by Civiqs spanning Jan. 20, 2025 to April 28, 2025 found the president's current approval rating in each swing state to be:

Trump's highest approval rating was in Wyoming (71%) and his lowest was in Vermont (26%), according to Civiqs. The full state-by-state results are live on the Civiqs website.

Respondents are randomly selected from a pool of potential voters, in this case there were 22,084 responses, as of April 28. You can read more about the methodology here.

Nationally, Trump's approval rating fell to 41 percent according to a mid-April CNN poll conducted shortly before the 100 Day mark. In February, 48% approved of the job his administration was doing, a number that slid to 45% in March.

“In any new administration, it’s a rollercoaster, right?” Speaker Mike Johnson said at a news conference Tuesday. Those “bumps in the road” are expected as Trump sets out to become the most “consequential president of the modern era,” he added.

The Hill reports that similar polls from the same time frame during Trump's first term as president were far steadier, with CNN polling finding his approval rating to be 44% in February, 2017, followed by 45% in March and 44% in April.

As U.S. consumer confidence plunges to a 5-year low amid uncertainty over impact of Trump's tariffs, polls show his approval rating when it comes to the economy – a perceived strength for many of his supporters – has dropped to 39%, the CNN poll found.

During his first term, the lowest rating on the economy was 44%, tallied in just one Dec. 17, 2017 poll, according to The Hill, which has reached out to the White House for comment.

The CNN poll, conducted between April 17-24, involved a random national sample of 1,678 U.S. adults.
