Tampa Bay Lightning winger Brandon Hagel was assessed a five-minute major for interference in Game 2 of the first-round series against the Florida Panthers on Thursday, after delivering a hit on Aleksander Barkov in the third period.
Barkov, who was not near the puck at the time of the hit, absorbed Hagel’s shoulder up high and caught air before crashing down onto the ice and into the boards.
The penalty was reviewed but ultimately upheld, with Barkov heading down the tunnel in the aftermath.
Florida was unable to capitalize on the extended power play but still secured a 2–0 win to take a 2-0 series lead.
Barkov, who has three assists so far in this series, missed the remainder of the game.
Panthers head coach Paul Maurice did not have an update on the centre when speaking to reporters post-game.
