An Olympic champion is stepping into the federal cabinet.

Four-time Olympic rowing medallist Adam van Koeverden was sworn in as Canada’s secretary of state on Tuesday under prime minister Mark Carney.

The 43-year-old van Koeverden, a member of the Liberty Party of Canada, won his third term as MP in Ontario’s Milton region during April’s federal election.

A longtime rower, the Toronto native competed at three Olympics, claiming gold in the 500 metres in 2004 while also adding two silver medals (2008, 2012) and a bronze (2004).

In a joint statement, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee congratulated van Koeverden on his appointment.

“We believe Secretary of State van Koeverden will bring an important voice to Parliament, understanding the role sport can play in addressing our pressing challenges and advocating for the needs of Canadian athletes at all levels to help strengthen the country’s sport system.”
