Olympic boxing salvaged for Los Angeles 2028 in dramatic turn of events

Boxing has been officially reinstated to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted unanimously in favour of its inclusion, with new international body World Boxing set to organise the tournament. The IOC ran boxing at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Games after the IBA was stripped of its status as the world sanctioning body over governance, finance, refereeing and ethical issues. This threatened the sport being removed from the Olympics altogether. However, a new sanctioning body, World Boxing, was formed to replace the IBA and gain Olympic recognition. The IOC granted World Boxing provisional recognition last month before the executive board of the IOC recommended on Monday that boxing be included in the upcoming summer Olympics. Boxing was not included in the initial sports program approved by the IOC sessions in February 2022 due to ongoing concerns with the original governing body, the International Boxing Association (IBA).

The IOC ran boxing at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Games after the IBA was stripped of its status as the world sanctioning body over governance, finance, refereeing and ethical issues.

This threatened the sport being removed from the Olympics altogether.

However, a new sanctioning body, World Boxing, was formed to replace the IBA and gain Olympic recognition.
