Netflix have added a new feature that allows viewers to watch content with dialogue-only subtitles. Find out how to do below.

Traditionally, subtitles have included cues for non-verbal sounds, such as a doorbell ringing or music playing. This is because the service is designed for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, who may need the cues for the context of the scene.

However, in recent years subtitles have been used by viewers watching on a lower volume, in a noisy environment, or if they have trouble understanding what an actor is saying. For this use, the streaming service has introduced dialogue-only subtitles that eliminate noise cues.

Here’s how to enable the dialogue-only subtitle function:

Navigate to the “audio” option, and then “subtitles”. You will then need to click on the option “English” instead of “English (CC)”, which is the option with the audio cues. “English” is dialogue only.

A press release from Netflix has said the new feature be rolled out on all new content, starting with You season five. The feature will also be included on all languages that Netflix offers subtitles for.

The streamer also claimed that 50 per cent of American watch their content with subtitles “most of the time”, with nearly half of all viewing hours in America happening with subtitles and captioning. The service already includes the option to adjust the size and font of the subtitles.

Netflix has enjoyed great success so far with its original content, with British hit Adolescence becoming a ratings juggernaut, prompting a cultural debate in the UK that saw the company make the show available to be shown in British schools.

Its hit show You also came to a close, although critics were not impressed with the thriller’s finale.
