In less than three weeks, the Chinese animated blockbuster “Ne Zha 2” has become the highest-grossing animated film worldwide, overtaking Pixar’s “Inside Out 2”.
According to ticketing platform Maoyan (via Reuters), the film has earned $1.69 billion U.S. dollars to date, with more than 99% of that box office revenue coming from mainland China.
The result has smashed multiple records in addition to the one above. It’s also the highest-grossing film of 2025 worldwide, the highest-grossing film in China to date, the highest-grossing film in a single box office territory, the highest-grossing non-English-language film ever released, the first non-English film to earn $1 billion at the box office, and the eighth highest-earning film worldwide to date.
A sequel to 2019’s “Ne Zha,” the story is based on the 16th century Chinese novel “The Investiture of the Gods” which follows a boy with magic powers who tries to defend the fortress town of Chentangguan.
Jiaozi helmed the film, which has broken box-office records in the Middle Kingdom and has more than doubled the gross of the second biggest film launch in China – 2021’s “The Battle at Lake Changjin”.
The film grossed $7.2 million in its opening weekend in the United States, a major increase from its predecessor’s $1.2 million opening weekend.
