Nathan Fillion Talks His Green Lantern

A longtime friend and collaborator with James Gunn, “Castle” and “The Rookie” actor Nathan Fillion will be coming to the new DC Universe in Gunn’s own “Superman” film this July.

Fillion will take on the role of Guy Gardner, an incarnation of Green Lantern that comes between Hal Jordan and John Stewart in the comics. The appearance will mark the first big-screen take on the Green Lantern for the new DCU, and certainly not the last.

Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre will be taking on the Jordan and Stewart roles respectively in HBO’s “Lanterns” series with the two of them expected to play their roles quite seriously for what will be a serious prestige drama.

That’s not the case for Fillion’s character who is starring a straight up comic book movie – complete with a hideous blond bowl cut. The actor calls his Guy Gardner “a jerk” and someone quite different to his fellow Lanterns. He tells TV Line:

“What’s important to know is, you don’t have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless. So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good.

He’s not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that’s the answer. That’s what you do in that moment.

I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman. He can’t!”

That fits in with the comic incarnation of Guy Gardner who has been dubbed a ‘complete tool’ and has had a prickly reception over the years. Whether Fillion will reprise the role for a cameo in HBO’s “Lanterns” series remains to be seen.
