“Minecraft” & “Sinners” Battle At Box-Office

After much-publicised recent struggles with several high-profile flops or misfires, Warner Bros. Pictures is taking a victory lap this weekend with the studio set to have two films vying for the top spot at the box-office.

Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” pulled in $19.2 million on Friday (including $4.7m in Thursday night previews), the movie on track for a $40 million debut which matches pre-release projections which were originally in the $30 million range until the soaring reviews pushed it higher to a $40-45 million projection.

The film has become the best reviewed wide-release film of the decade – sitting at a 98% (8.7/10) with critics and a 97% (4.8/5) with audiences along with achieving a very rare for a horror film ‘A’ CinemaScore. It’s also set for the eleventh best opening ever over an Easter frame.

The film will be neck-and-neck with phenom “A Minecraft Movie” which made $16 million on Friday alone and is tracking for a $45 million haul in its third weekend.

Angel Studios’ animated “The King of Kings” is expected to be third with $17.5 million in its second weekend – a drop of just 9% in its second weekend. Disney’s “The Amateur” will be fourth with $7.5 million, and “Warfare” fifth with $3.5 million.

The overall weekend at the cinema is expected to come in at $134 million – 104% ahead of the same weekend a year ago (the non-Easter one), and just 2% behind the Easter 2024 weekend when “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” “Dune: Part Two” and “Kung Fu Panda 4” were all in cinemas.
