Chicken Jockey at the ready, noisy screenings of A Minecraft Movie are set to take place in cinemas next month.
A Minecraft Movie sees a group of outsiders – Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Jason Momoa), Natalie (Emma Myers), Henry (Sebastian Hansen) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) – sucked into The Overworld where they team up with Jack Black’s Steve to defeat the villainous Pig sorceress Malgosha.
Despite poor reviews, the movie adaptation of hit video game Minecraft has become the biggest film of 2025 so far.
It also inspired fierce debates about cinema etiquette after clips of audiences singing along to the film, throwing tubs of popcorn and generally losing their minds to the “chicken jockey” scene went viral across social media. Some cinemas issued warnings that “any form of anti-social behaviour, especially anything that may disturb other guests such as loud screaming, clapping and shouting will not be tolerated,” while Jack Black also surprised fans by turning up to a screening of A Minecraft Movie and asked people not to throw popcorn.
However director Jared Hess has found the reactions hilarious. “It’s been a total blast. I’m just laughing my brains out every time someone sends me a new video,” he said in an interview with The New York Times. “Just the fact that people are making memories at the movies – that’s what it’s all about. That’s why we do it. I never could have anticipated this level of passion and fun and craziness that’s happening.”
Now Warner Bros. has announced plans for A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition. The new screenings will take place next month and will encourage audiences to “sing (and meme) along” with the movie (via The Hollywood Reporter). “Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures invite fans back to the theater to experience A Minecraft Movie together in a whole new way! You know the moments. You know the lines. You love the songs! Now it’s time to get loose, laugh out loud and belt out those lyrics like a true diamond-tier fan.”
A number of UK cinemas will host screenings of A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition this weekend.
In a two-star review, NME wrote: “Unfortunately, A Minecraft Movie feels more like an advert for the game rather than a celebration of what makes it great. There is just enough in the brisk 101-minute runtime to inspire newcomers to check out The Overworld for themselves but you’d think a film about the awesome power of creativity would be a bit more innovative.”
In other news, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was only released last week but a movie adaptation is already in the works.
