Michael Bay, Sydney Sweeney To “OutRun”

Michael Bay is attached to direct and actress Sydney Sweeney is onboard to produce a feature film adaptation of the iconic SEGA arcade driving video game “OutRun”.

Bay will also produce alongside regular collaborator Brad Fuller through their Platinum Dunes banner. Sweeney is only producing at present, with no deal to star in the project which is currently in the development stage.

Also producing is SEGA’s Toru Nakahara, while Jayson Rothwell will pen the script.

Considered one of SEGA’s flagship franchises alongside “Sonic the Hedgehog,” the first game was released in 1986 with players driving a fast car goal and trying to avoid traffic and reach one of five destinations before time runs out.

Made only by a small team on a limited time, the title became a critical and commercial success and the highest-grossing arcade game of 1987 worldwide as well as Sega’s most successful arcade cabinet of the 1980s.

The title was famed for pioneering many aspects of car racing games from simulating real life driving aspects like horsepower, torque and gear ratios to AI assistance for things like drifting. The game’s soundtrack was also widely acclaimed.

The news comes in the wake of the massive success of “Minecraft” which has dominated the box-office this month, and the critical success of HBO’s “The Last of Us” which is the talk of social media today following last night’s massive episode.
