Oscar Piastri delivered a masterclass to lead Lando Norris in a McLaren one-two finish at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, securing his third consecutive victory.
Polesitter Max Verstappen struggled with tyre wear and was overtaken not only by the McLarens but also by Mercedes’ George Russell, who claimed the final podium spot.
The race, marked by strategic battles and virtual safety car periods, showcased once again McLaren’s incredibly pace and Piastri’s championship credentials.
Early Drama and McLaren’s Charge
The race ignited with a fierce Turn 1 duel. Verstappen, starting from pole, held off Norris, who had taken the inside line from second.
Verstappen’s robust defense pushed Norris into the Turn 3 runoff, dropping him to sixth. Norris vented his frustration over the radio, saying, “He forced me off, what am I going to do, drive into the wall?” Stewards, however, deemed no action necessary.
Meanwhile, a Turn 1 clash between Jack Doohan and Liam Lawson triggered a virtual safety car (VSC) on lap 4 to clear debris, halting both drivers’ races.
Post-restart, McLaren’s superiority shone. Piastri, starting fourth, swiftly dispatched Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli and began pressuring Verstappen.
On lap 14, Piastri executed a clinical pass into Turn 1, capitalizing on Verstappen’s lock-up. Norris, recovering from his early setback, followed suit, though his battle with Verstappen was messier.
After a failed attempt on lap 18 that saw both drivers run off, Norris sealed the move on the straight a lap later, chasing Piastri, who had built a nine-second lead.
Strategic Shifts and VSC Advantage
A second VSC on lap 24, caused by Oliver Bearman’s Haas retiring with a Ferrari power unit failure, reshuffled strategies.
Teams yet to pit, including Russell and Lewis Hamilton, gained an edge with quicker stops. Russell cycled out ahead of Verstappen and Antonelli to secure third, while Hamilton’s switch to mediums positioned him for a late charge.
However, Hamilton’s pursuit of Antonelli was stymied by being held behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, leading to a late position swap that left Hamilton visibly frustrated in eighth.
Piastri’s Commanding Victory
From the lap 30 restart, Piastri controlled the race, maintaining a comfortable gap over Norris, who closed slightly but never threatened. Piastri crossed the line 4.630s ahead, with Russell holding off Verstappen for third.
Williams’ Alex Albon impressed in fifth, fending off Antonelli, while Leclerc and Hamilton secured seventh and eighth after Ferrari’s swap.
Carlos Sainz took ninth for Williams, and Yuki Tsunoda clung to 10th for Red Bull despite a five-second penalty for pitlane speeding, narrowly holding off Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar.
The race saw four retirements, with Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto joining Bearman, Doohan, and Lawson on the sidelines due to power unit woes.
Haas, Alpine, Sauber, and Aston Martin left empty-handed, with Esteban Ocon a distant 12th.
Piastri’s fourth win of 2025 extends his championship lead over Norris to 16 points, with Verstappen now 32 points adrift in third. Russell trails Verstappen by six points.
McLaren’s dominance in Miami signals their intent to fight for both titles as the season progresses.
