Metallica pay tribute to collaborator Marianne Faithfull
”The biggest Thank You and Fuck Yeah for your incredible and unique contribution to our music.”

As the music world mourns the loss of the legendary Marianne Faithfull, a tribute has come in from Metallica, who featured Marianne on their classic 1997 single “The Memory Remains” and in its video, marking the only time Metallica have ever had a guest singer on a song (not counting their collaborative album with Lou Reed of course). The band also performed the song with her on Saturday Night Live in 1997, and again live in 2011 at one of their 30th anniversary concerts. Drummer Lars Ulrich writes:
Thank you, Marianne…
For the good times
For your kindness
For the great stories
For your fearlessness…And the biggest Thank You and Fuck Yeah for your incredible and unique contribution to our music, and for always being so willing to join us in performing it…and partake in the ensuing shenanigans!
Rest in Peace
Blabbermouth points out that singer James Hetfield also spoke about Marianne’s contributions to the song in a 1997 interview: “We needed a real character, been-through-it-all voice. We got ahold of her and she agreed to do it. So, we flew to Dublin on the way to Belgium. We met up with her in the studio, went in and got her drunk and then she sang this bit. It was perfect. She definitely had the voice and it created a real eerie vibe.”
