Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving replaces Anthony Davis at All-Star Game

As one Dallas Maverick is ruled out for the All-Star Game, another enters.

Veteran guard Kyrie Irving has been chosen by the NBA to replace centre Anthony Davis at the All-Star Game, the league announced Monday.

Davis was ruled out of the annual exhibition after suffering a left adductor strain on Saturday. He’s slated to miss multiple weeks with the injury, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

This will be Irving’s ninth All-Star Game appearance. The 32-year-old is averaging 24.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 47.5 per cent from the field and 40.7 per cent from beyond the arc in 42 games this season.

With the All-Star draft already done, Irving will slot in on Team Shaq in Davis’s place. He’ll play alongside former teammates like LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum.

After not being named to the team as a starter through the fan vote or as a reserve by the coaches, NBA commissioner Adam Silver handpicked Irving to take Davis’s spot as an injury replacement.

It was announced earlier on Monday that Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young would replace Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo in the Eastern Conference after the latter suffered a calf strain.

The 74th edition of the NBA All-Star Game is set to take place on Sunday, Feb. 16 at Chase Center in San Francisco.
