Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts” is set to kick off this year’s Summer box-office in early May, and the film has now popped up on tracking services.
THR reports that the antihero team-up film is headed for a domestic debut anywhere between $63-77 million – with a mid-point $70 million being seen as the target.
That’s a strong opening for a regular film, but for a Marvel Cinematic Universe title opening in summer – it’s decidedly on the low end.
The studio doesn’t seem too fussed though. Despite some familiar characters, this is being pegged as one of those ‘first’ franchise films so a slower start is expected.
More crucially, response at early screenings for the film has been very strong with reports suggesting it could be one of the best MCU films in years. Exhibitors are also high on the film following footage screened at CinemaCon last week.
Plus the addition of multiple “Thunderbolts” cast members to the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” is expected to have a bit of a knock-on effect.
Whatever happens, the debut is set to eclipse last Summer’s kick-off film “The Fall Guy” which had a domestic debut of just $27 million – bombing on arrival.
