Like many at the moment, the game industry is doing it hard – so much so even a major success story is no guarantee of employment.
Posting on his LinkedIn profile on Tuesday, developer NetEase’s California-based game director Thaddeus Sasser claims he and an unspecified number of American developers on ‘Rivals’ have been let go.
In his posting, he says: “This is such a weird industry. My stellar, talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games …and were just laid off!”.
Designer Jack Burrows also confirmed that NetEase had let them go, saying: “Was an enormous pleasure to work with my American coworkers who join me in this sad culling. Just couldn’t dodge that big boot I guess, no matter how big the success of the gig.”
The layoffs follow an apparently hugely successful launch for the hero shooter which debuted in December and has enjoyed consistently high player count on Steam. It is seen as one of those rare live-service games that has been able to break through.
A Bungie employee has commented on the news, claiming they’d heard the layoffs were part of a broad decision by NetEase to pull out of North America.
