Marvel Pauses Development On Tv Shows Nova And Strange Academy

According to a new trade report, Marvel pauses their development on the TV shows Nova and Strange Academy alongside another called Terror, Inc. The report comes from Deadline and here’s what they have to say.

‘Marvel Television has paused development on three projects: Nova, Strange Academy and Terror, Inc.’

‘Sources stressed to Deadline that these projects were never officially greenlit, and may still come to fruition at some point. The studio has simply shifted its priorities at the moment.’

Now, if you’re a regular you’ve read rumors about two of these shows. Strange Academy was only rumored, but Marvel’s Nate Moore confirmed Nova was in early development. Moore did however warn that the show hadn’t yet shifted into an active phase. Rumors however, have placed Nova much further along. We even had a rumored plot involving Annihilus’ Annihilation Wave being the primary antagonists. Nova also had a showrunner in Ed Bernero. 

‘We’re told the decision is also reflective of a new model for producing television that’s emerged at Marvel in recent years. Originally, Marvel approached series development in much the same way it handled features: a slate was announced, and what was teased was more or less what got made. A couple of years ago, senior leadership decided to retool the development process, as they were also revamping their new Daredevil series, Born Again.’

I think we all knew this was happening prior to this report. However, I’m less sure that’s the specific reason Nova has been paused. My guess is that the show would have required a hefty budget to get right. I’m not sure that fits Marvel’s new model for TV shows. Therefore, my guess is this is a cost decisions for now. Perhaps Nova can be retooled as a movie post-Secret Wars? I do hope we get that story at some point though.

As for Strange Academy, far as we know it would be led by Benedict Wong. America Chavez and some new characters would have been his students.  I actually don’t think this would need to be that extensive to get right, but it would require some very good scripts.

I just get the feeling that outside of what we know is definitely getting made, nothing new is happening till Secret Wars. That means we have Spider-Man 4 to try and squeeze in and likely Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. As for Terror, Inc., your guess is as good as mine. The comic book is…weird.
