Mark Hoppus Reflects on Suicidal Thoughts After 2005 Blink-182 Breakup: ‘I Sank Lower & Lower’

Mark Hoppus is getting vulnerable about his mental health struggles, particularly after Blink-182 fell apart in 2005.

In his new memoir, Fahrenheit-182, the rocker recalled battling suicidal thoughts following guitarist Tom DeLonge’s departure from the group in 2005, after more than 10 years as a band. “When Blink fell apart, I lost everything. I lost my direction, I lost my confidence, I lost my sense of self,” he wrote in an excerpt published by People. “I didn’t know what I was supposed to do or who I was supposed to be. I’d hear one of our songs playing in a store and have to walk out.”

He added, “I sank lower and lower. I could tell I was near the bottom when I started finding comfort in the thought of suicide: If it gets bad enough, I can always just kill myself. I started talking to a psychiatrist who put me on medications, which helped a lot. It let me take a breath. It allowed me the space in my own head to say, ‘You’re being a d—, Mark. Knock it off.’”

The trio reunited in 2011, and though DeLonge quit again in 2015, the band has since come back together in 2023 for their ninth studio album One More Time…

Fahrenheit-182 is out on April 8, and is co-authored by Los Angeles-based journalist and author Dan Ozzi. To celebrate the book’s release, Hoppus is embarking seven-date tour which will see him in conversation with a moderator as he discusses its writing and contents, and pairs it all with his trademark humor. The tour launches in New York City on April 9, and visits Somerville, MA; Washington D.C.; Philadelphia and Chicago, before wrapping up with two dates in California as he visits El Cajon and Los Angeles.
