But the fact that even needs to be said underlines how bad the Red Devils have been in 2024/25. A 17-point cushion above the bottom three means United will officially be safe if they win this weekend or if Leicester City fail to beat Liverpool. Yet it remains possible for Ruben Amorim’s team to finish as low as 17th. West Ham United occupy that spot at present, but they are just three points behind United. Even if things do not get quite that bad, United will almost certainly finish in the bottom half of the top flight for the first time since 1989/90.  Alex Ferguson was in charge back then. Things eventually came good under the Scot, and Amorim – with some justification – will argue he needs more time to get United back on track. There has not been a great deal to cheer about in his Premier League tenure so far, however. There was a victory at the Etihad Stadium, but high points have generally been few and far between. Amorim remains wedded to a 3-4-3 system that does not really suit any of his players. United may well look better in that system once the manager has made some more signings, but that is by no means certain. Although there is nothing meaningful left to play for in the league this season, United could do with ending the campaign strongly. That would at least suggest they are starting to move in the right direction. Right now, though, it is hard to have much faith in this team’s ability to string a few victories together. Wolves to score first

Manchester United have been slow starters at Old Trafford in 2024/25. Too often under both Erik ten Hag and Amorim, the hosts have hit the ground trudging.

United have conceded the first goal in 10 of their 16 home games to date. Only Leicester City and Southampton have worse records in that regard.

Wolves went ahead against Tottenham last weekend with less than two minutes on the clock. They have taken the lead in three of their last four games.

Wolves are a real threat on the counter-attack, so while United will have a lot of the ball early on, they could be caught cold on the break.

At the odds available, this seems like a no-brainer.

⚽ Choose Wolves to score first at 7/5 with Paddy Power ⚽

Matheus Cunha to score any time

Matheus Cunha is available again for Wolves after serving a lengthy ban. However, Pereira sensibly chose to select his star man as a substitute against Tottenham.

Cunha entered the fray for the final 20 minutes and added his name to the scoresheet late on to put the game beyond Spurs.

He looks set to start on Sunday, when his direct speed and ball-carrying ability will be valuable.

Cunha’s future may well lie away from Molineux given how well he has played this term, but for now his only focus will be on finishing the season strongly.

We expect Cunha to score his 15th goal of the Premier League season against Manchester United.
