Manchester United have completely lost their identity – even Ruben Amorim is unsure of his future

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has delivered a brutal assessment on the club’s decline, whilst expressing his doubts over manager Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils have endured a nightmare season, currently languishing in 14th in the table with just four games left to play, in what is set to be their worst campaign in the Premier League. The Red Devils can still salvage their season by winning the Europa League, with their semi-final first-leg against Athletic Bilbao later this week.

Victory in Europe’s second-tier competition would secure them Champions League qualification next term, and Meulensteen admitted this could be the springboard Amorim’s side need to prompt a rebuild next season.

He said: “A lot of that [their season] hangs on those two semi-final games, and then you’ve still got a final to play if you get through.

“Because that would create so much more perspective for Ruben Amorim and Manchester United if they say: ‘Well, we’re back in the Champions League right now’.

“And make sure that we do get the right players in that he wants, plus also making sure that they are going to be a force in the Premier League again.

“But if that isn’t the case, and the nucleus of the same squad next year is the same as what it is now, why would it be any different?”
