The franchise finished the season with a 6-11 record and people inside the team would point to their exhausted roster as the reason behind their struggles. So it’s no shock that San Francisco have been busy this off-season. They’ve let go of 17 players in what has been a massive shake-up to a franchise that is known for its stable roster. In the midst of this transformation, has been the arrival of Jones, who improves their quarterback group which had already lost Brandon Allen and Josh Dobbs. The former Jaguars signal-caller signed a two-year $7 million deal with the 49ers and immediately referenced his relationship with starting quarterback Brock Purdy as a key factor. “I feel like there’s a lot of good people here, a lot of winners here,” Jones said, via the team website. “So really just wanted to surround myself with winners.” “I know Brock personally and he’s done a great job and played really good football in the NFL,” Jones said. Purdy is in the midst of contract talks with the franchise, and is believing to be seeking around $50million a season – a figure that so far is holding up any attempt for the one-time Mr Irrelevant to join the ranks of the league’s highest earning QBs. Jones also singled out the team’s winning mentality as why he wanted to head west. “And obviously Kyle and his résumé speaks for itself. He’s done a great job in the NFL and he always produces each year and that’s something that I want to be around.” Jones was once billed to be a future NFL star when the New England Patriots selected him with the 15th pick in the 2021 Draft and had been heavily linked with the 49ers that year. Now the 49ers coach gets to see Jones up close, as the team weigh up whether or not Purdy – in the final year of his four-year rookie contract – is worth a huge deal. Jones will hope for a similar effect on his career after appearing in 10 games for the Jaguars last season including sevens starts for injured Trevor Lawrence. He completed 65.3% of his passes for 1,672 yards and eight touchdowns, along with eight interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl as an alternate as a rookie after throwing for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns and leading the Patriots to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth. It’ll be tough competition for Jones with Purdy ahead of him but this is perhaps the best place for him to be at this stage of his career.
