Listen to Deftones’ Chino Moreno bringing out the “cold, dystopic feel” of The Cure’s ‘Warsong’ on new remix

Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has shared a “cold, dystopic” version of The Cure’s ‘Warsong’. Check it out below.
The cover comes as part of a new remix version of Robert Smith and co.’s latest album, ‘Songs Of A Lost World’, which was released last year to critical acclaim. Titled ‘Mixes Of A Lost World’, the album has already been previewed by Four Tet’s remix of the single ‘Alone’, and is also set to include Paul Oakenfold, Mura Masa, frequent touring friends Mogwai, past collaborators 65DaysOfStatic and more.
Today (May 2), the latest preview of the record has been shared in the form of a ‘Warsong’ cover, created by Deftones’ singer Chino Moreno.
For the most part, the new version captures the same charm and atmosphere as seen in the original track, although it adds a slightly more sinister feel. It peels back the layers of the ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ version to deliver a harsher, more mechanical approach.
“I chose ‘Warsong’ to remix as it’s one of those slow-building, brooding musical pieces that have always drawn me into The Cure’s music,” Moreno said. “My idea with this remix was to strip it back slightly of its organic instrumentation and bring in ridged, mechanical percussion and some down-pitched vocals aimed to bring forth the cold/dystopic feel of the song while maintaining the core beauty of what existed.”

This isn’t the first time that Chino Moreno and The Cure have joined forces either, back in 2020 Robert Smith shared a remix of ‘Teenager’ for Deftones’ ‘White Pony’ remix album ‘Black Stallion’, and before then he lent vocals to ††† (Crosses)’ ‘Girls Float + Boys Cry.
The full ‘Mixes Of A Lost World’ album will be available from June 13 via Fiction/Polydor, and all of the recording royalties from The Cure will be donated to War Child UK. Visit here to pre-order and here to find out more about the charity.
In a five-star review of ‘Songs Of A Lost World‘ – which went on to be named one of our Best Albums Of 2024 – NME wrote: “Merciless? Yes, but there’s always enough heart in the darkness and opulence in the sound to hold you and place these songs alongside The Cure’s finest.
“The frontman suggested that another two records may be arriving at some point, but ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ feels sufficient enough for the wait we’ve endured, just for being arguably the most personal album of Smith’s career. Mortality may loom, but there’s colour in the black and flowers on the grave.”
As for more new material from The Cure, Smith has confirmed that a “companion piece” album to ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ is “ready to go”, and may be shared before a yet-to-be-announced 2025 world tour. He also added that the band are still working on more material, and is currently underway with another record of “completely random stuff“.
