Kevin De Bruyne has confirmed he will bring his long and illustrious spell with Manchester City to an end in the summer.

De Bruyne has helped City win 16 pieces of silverware across an incredible ten-year spell at the Etihad, in what has been the most successful period in the club’s history under Pep Guardiola.

Having racked up 106 goals and 174 assists in 413 games for City, the 33-year-old is widely considered to be among the finest attacking midfielders of all time in the Premier League and has twice been named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year.

Though City are some way off the pace in the top flight, De Bruyne will hope to add more trophy to his collection before the end of the campaign, with the English champions still in the mix for the FA Cup.

With De Bruyne’s contract up in June, Guardiola had been hopeful of a resolution being found for the Belgium international to extend his stay for at least another season.

But De Bruyne put the uncertainty over his City future to bed with a heartfelt message on social media on Friday afternoon, thanking fans, his team-mates and loved ones for the support they had provided over the last decade.

‘Seeing this, you probably realise where this is heading. So I’ll get straight to it and let you all know that these will be my final months as a Manchester City player.

‘Nothing about this is easy to write, but as football players, we all know this day eventually comes. That day is here – and you deserve to hear it from me first.

‘Football led me to all of you – and to this city. Chasing my dream, not knowing this period would change my life.

‘This City. This club. These people… gave me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING back! And guess what – we won everything.

‘Whether we like it or not, it’s time to say goodbye. Suri, Rome, Mason, Michele, and I are beyond grateful for what this place has meant to our family.

””Manchester” will forever be on our kids’ passports – and more importantly, in each of our hearts. This will always be our HOME.

‘We cannot thank the city, club, staff, team-mates, friends, and family enough for this 10-year ride. Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter.

‘Let’s enjoy these last moments together! Much love, “KDB”.’

Facing the media shortly after De Bruyne’s announcement, Guardiola said the Belgian had transcended football with the tremendous impact he had made at City.

‘A sad day. A happy day for the fact that the pleasure personally that I lived this time with him. What he gave all of us, his humanity and of course I don’t have to say his influence on our success in the last decade,’ the City head coach told reporters.

‘It would be impossible to imagine that without him. A sad day because a part of us is leaving. When Vincent [Kompany] left or Sergio [Aguero] left or David Silva left, and I would say more names, it is a sad day.

‘But still we have ten games and hopefully 11, and six games at home that we can still enjoy with our fans and I’m pretty sure he will get the love and the recognition from all of us that he deserves.

‘His assists, his goals, His vision in the final third is so difficult to replace. Over how many years and games, that makes him unique. This is a business and important players have to perform well and managers have to perform well.

‘Any person can discuss their performance and in this last decade he has been outstanding. We won a lot of trophies and he has been involved in every single one. I think we will remember him. He’s part of this club.

‘The club said to him the doors are open for the rest of his life. Whatever he wants to do, he’s part of the family of this club.

‘The impact of some players transcends even what they do on the pitch and Kevin is one of them.’

De Bruyne next club odds

Speculation over De Bruyne’s City future can now finally be put to one side, but there remains uncertainty surrounding where exactly the six-time Premier League champion will be playing next season.

The Saudi Pro League has long been mooted as a possible destination and De Bruyne, with the 2023 Champions League winner reportedly tempted to follow in the footsteps of former City team-mates Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte.

However, there is also strong interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, including Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, and the MLS is seen as another option for the ex-Chelsea, Wolfsburg and Genk man.

‘Having won six Premier League titles in a decade at Man City, Kevin de Bruyne has announced he will leave the club this summer. Following the trend of recent years, Saudi Arabia is his likeliest destination and a move there is priced at 4/5,’ Befair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom explained.

‘While the MLS is 11/4 as his second most likely route, a move to join his former City and Belgium teammate at Bayern Munich is priced at 9/1 as his third most likely option.

‘Having played under Jose Mourinho at the start of his career, he could go full circle and reunite with ‘The Special One’, with a move to Fenerbahce being 25/1. A romantic return to first club Genk could also be on the cards, with a price of 40/1 for this to materialise in the coming months.’

What has De Bruyne said about Saudi Pro League move?

Last summer, De Bruyne fuelled rumours that he could look to complete a move to Saudi Arabia when his contract expires, telling Belgian outlet HLN: ‘For Michele [Lacroix, De Bruyne’s wife], an exotic adventure is okay.

‘These are also conversations that we are increasingly having as a family

‘I still have one year left on my contract, so I have to think about what could happen. My eldest son is now eight years old and knows nothing but England. He also asks how long I will play for City.

‘Once the moment comes, we will have to deal with it in a certain way.’

De Bruyne said he had to at least consider the Saudi Pro League given the incredible riches on offer in the Middle East.

‘At my age you have to be open to everything,’ he added.

‘You’re talking about incredible amounts of money in what may be the end of my career. Sometimes you have to think about that.

‘If I play there for two years, I will be able to earn an incredible amount of money.

‘Before that I had to play football for 15 years. I may not even reach that amount yet.

‘Then you have to think about what that could mean next. But at the moment I haven’t had to think about that yet.’
