Pundit Karl Rove warned President Trump is not in good standing with voters on economic issues as he closes in on the 100th day of his second term in the White House this week.
“Well, he’s off to a good start only on one issue, and that is border security, where his approval rating is 11 points ahead of his overall approval rating. He gets reasonably good marks on immigration and handling of deportations, but even those he’s upside down on,” Rove, who served as a top aide to former President George W. Bush, said during an appearance on Fox News on Monday.
“When it gets to the economy, he is in very bad shape," Rove added in comments first highlighted by Mediaite.
"And it’s not only that he’s in the short term in bad shape, there’s also evidence in the poll that no matter, even if he gets his way on certain things like tariffs, that he’s not good in the long run."
Trump earlier Monday blasted a number of news organizations and polls showing his approval rating slipping and outlining widespread concerns from voters about the cost of living and consumer goods.
The president regularly argues mainstream media outlets do not focus enough on his "successful" moves on immigration, and suggested Monday that the media and pollsters "suffer from Trump derangement syndrome."
Trump and his allies have argued the tariffs he is proposing on foreign nations will have long-term positive impacts on the economy and benefit Americans workers and companies.
Rove, a longtime political operative and cable news commentator, has frequently come under fire from Trump, most recently when the president in March urged Fox to stop putting him on the air.
