Jesse Plemons Joins New “Hunger Games”

Jesse Plemons has joined the cast of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” as a young version of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Plutarch Heavensbee from the original films.

“Sunrise on the Reaping” opens with the young Plutarch in District 12, capturing the reaping of the Tributes there. The film takes place in the world of Panem, a full 24 years before the events of “The Hunger Games,” starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games/Second Quarter Quell.

Hoffman died suddenly in 2014 with only a week of shooting remaining on the last of the “Mockingjay” films, leading to director Francis Lawrence rewriting scenes to give Hoffman’s dialogue to other actors rather than use any CG assistance.

Erin Westerman, co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, says in a statement: “His Plutarch will be both a tribute to the character fans have already come to know and a portrayal he makes his own. We can’t wait for audiences to see it.”

Plemons and Hoffman previously worked together on Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2012 film “The Master” where Plemons portrayed Hoffman’s son. Plemons is coming off work in “Civil War,” “Kinds of Kindness,” “Zero Day” and the current season of “Black Mirror”. He has “Bugonia” due out later this year.

Filming on the new “Hunger Games” film is set to begin this July. Lawrence returns to direct from a script by Billy Ray based on the recent novel which sold 1.2 million copies in its first week in the United States.
