And then there were two. 

Back in November, just one point separated the top six in Serie A. Only 12 rounds of fixtures had been completed at that stage, but many hoped that there would be a multi-pronged fight for the title in 2024/25.

One by one, most contenders have fallen away. Juventus’ penchant for draws saw them fall too far adrift of top spot. They were soon joined by Fiorentina, who suffered an untimely dip in form on either side of the new year.

Lazio also dropped off around the same period, before Atalanta slipped out of the top two in early 2025. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have now won just one of their last six Serie A assignments.

That leaves Inter and Napoli as the remaining contenders for the scudetto. Napoli have a three-point lead going into the weekend, but the title race is too close to call.

In a quirk of the fixture list, this is the second meeting between Inter and Fiorentina in a matter of days.

The two teams met on Thursday in a rearranged fixture. The original game in December had to be abandoned after 17 minutes when Edoardo Bove, the Fiorentina midfielder, collapsed on the pitch.

Subsequent tests showed the Roma loanee had suffered a heart attack. Medics from both teams rushed onto the field to intervene as quickly as possible, a decision which undoubtedly helped Bove survive. His footballing future is uncertain, but the 22-year-old is thankfully out of hospital and on the mend.

Thursday’s repeat fixture began with 17 minutes on the clock, and players who were suspended for the original encounter were not permitted to play. January signings were also not allowed to feature. 

Fiorentina ran out 3-0 winners, inflicting upon Inter their biggest defeat of the season in any competition. It was an impressive result for Raffaele Palladino’s side and they are now looking to do the double over Inter by triumphing at San Siro.

With Napoli continuing to grind out results (they have taken 22 points from the last 24 available and have lost just one of their last 12 games), it is crucial that Inter bounce back at the first time of asking. 

With Napoli in action on Sunday, Simone Inzaghi’s team could be six points adrift of top spot by the time this game kicks off. The pressure is on Inter.

Napoli have a stronger defensive record than Inter, but the latter are much more effective in attack. 

Even after drawing a blank against Fiorentina on Thursday, Inter have outscored their title rivals 56-38. That is quite a gap given there are only three points between the pair.

By at least one measure Inter have been the most entertaining team to watch in Serie A this term. Their 22 games have averaged a league-high 3.39 goals every 90 minutes.

There were more than 2.5 goals in the reverse fixture and we expect the same outcome here.

However, Inter will be determined to enact revenge on Fiorentina and, with home advantage behind them, Inzaghi’s side can return to winning ways on Monday night.

Both teams to score

Fiorentina deserve great credit for keeping a clean sheet against Inter. They became the first team in Serie A to shut the champions out in 2024/25.

Palladino’s men will struggle to repeat the feat in Milan. Inter have scored 27 goals in 12 games at San Siro, while in each of their last four home matches they have found the net at least twice.

There are plenty of reasons to believe Fiorentina will also score. Their 3-0 blitz of Inter last time out will have given them confidence. 

Moise Kean, who grabbed a brace in that match, is having the most prolific season of his career, while Lucas Beltran and Andrea Colpani offer plenty going forward, and Nicolo Zaniolo is eligible following his loan move to Florence.

Attacks should get the better of defences in this one.

Lautaro Martinez to score any time

Lautaro Martinez was not at his best in the first instalment of this double-header, but broadly speaking the Argentina international is having another fine campaign.

Nine goals in 20 league games means his ratio is tracking slightly below that of recent years, but Martinez remains one of the best attackers in Europe.

The 27-year-old has generally been effective of late, scoring nine goals in his last 11 appearances in all competitions, including a hat-trick against Monaco in his most recent home game.

Fiorentina succeeded in holding Martinez at arm’s length on Thursday, but doing so for a second time will be much more difficult.
