The Atlanta Braves have added some last-minute depth to the bench before the start of the season.
The team and veteran outfielder Alex Verdugo have agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.5-million contract.
Verdugo will begin the season in triple-A after missing most of spring training as an unsigned free agent.
Verdugo, 28, spent last season with the New York Yankees, where he hit .233/.291/.356 in 149 games. He primarily played left field for the Yankees in 2024 and tied his career-high with 13 home runs. He appeared in all 14 playoff games for the Yankees and hit a home run in Game 3 of the World Series.
Brendan Kuty of The Athletic spoke to a few Yankees players for a column published earlier this week about Verdugo. All the players Kuty spoke to were surprised Verdugo had not found a new team yet this off-season.
“He’s such a great player,” Aaron Judge told Kuty. “He brings so much value and versatility to a team.”
“He’s, I think, the definition of ride or die as a teammate,” shortstop Anthony Volpe added. “…He was one of my favourite teammates ever and I think in so many ways, he helped us win games, whether it was on the field or what he could bring to the clubhouse.”
