The General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) has issued a statement saying that insurance providers will work to expedite claims for vehicles and property covered by insurance, and has advised those affected by the fire to contact their insurers as soon as possible.

According to the association, initial reports as of April 2 indicate that more than 305 individuals have sustained injuries, with damage affecting 331 private vehicles, 88 buildings and 237 homes. The insurance industry is expediting the claims process for all eligible motor, personal accident, retail fire, homeowners’ or householders’ insurance policyholders affected by the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion and fire, it said.

Key areas of cover provided by insurers for fire-related incidents include comprehensive motor or third-party fire and theft, which covers fire-related damage to vehicles; personal accident, which covers permanent disablement or death, for which claims can be filed by kext of kin; in addition to policies for homeowners, commercial, and medical insurance, according to PIAM.

“We recognise the emotional and financial toll this tragic event has had on families and business owners. Our industry is committed to making the claims process as smooth as possible, ensuring policyholders receive the assistance they need. We are anticipating a large number of claims as property and vehicle owners begin to head back to the affected area and are prepared to support them every step of the way,” said PIAM chairman Ng Kok Kheng.

Yesterday, a section of the Elite Highway was closed to all vehicles in both directions between Seafield and Bandar Saujana Putra as a precaution due to the proximity of the fire to the highway.
