Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Duty Free Global from Ireland, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

TÜRKIYE. The joint venture between TAV Airport and Fraport this week opened the expanded Terminal 2 at Antalya International Airport, with commercial space almost trebling to 33,000sq m. We feature images from inauguration day in our regular column.

The partners said that the size and quality of retail, dining and lounges have been taken to “an entirely new level” at the new facility, which welcomed its first passengers in recent days.

The expansion marks phase one of a major project to upgrade the airport, which now has annual capacity for 65 million passengers. Antalya Airport served more than 38 million travellers last year, 31.7 million international and 6.6 million domestic.

The dining and retail offer at T2 reaches new heights through BFA and ATÜ Duty Free following the €850 million investment. Below, a warm Turkish welcome for the first guests to use the terminal.

TAV Airports CEO Serkan Kaptan said: “We are proud to complete the massive expansion project at Antalya Airport and welcome our first passengers at Türkiye’s second busiest hub in terms of international traffic.

“This investment will significantly elevate the passenger experience and provide the capacity for further traffic growth. It’s a strategic investment which lays the ground for airlines to base more aircraft in Antalya, and provides the necessary infrastructure to support the region’s long-term development.”

Fraport CEO Dr. Stefan Schulte said: “The opening of the additional terminal areas is a milestone for us in strengthening Antalya’s position as the leading holiday airport in the Mediterranean region. The new infrastructure enables us to meet the rapidly increasing demand for air travel to the Turkish Riviera. This construction project has been a remarkable success. We have once again demonstrated our ability to implement complex, demanding projects in a very short timeframe.”

As reported, BFA, a partnership between BTA (60%) and Fraport (40%), has delivered a varied, locally-led F&B offer. The signature location is Taste of Anatolia, a collaboration with renowned Turkish chef Ömür Akkor. Designed to reflect the culinary heritage of Anatolia, its offer represents modern approach to traditional regional recipes, with seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, said BFA.

The F&B offer at T2 includes 28 outlets across 7,500sq m. BFA also provides F&B in the terminal lounges.

ATÜ Duty-Free begins operations

ATÜ Duty-Free – a subsidiary of TAV Airports and Unifree Duty Free/Gebr. Heinemann –  has opened its main store in the T2 extension, alongside a multi-brand fashion and accessories concept. It introduces the popular Old Bazaar concept featuring locally-sourced food and souvenirs.

ATÜ manages two arrival stores in T2 with more stores in the piers will follow. Total duty-free space will eventually span around 12,000sq m.

T2 houses three lounges across Comfort, Elite and Premium tiers. The 1,000sq m Comfort Lounge provides services mainly to loyalty programme members and airline customers.

The Elite and Premium lounges across 2,500sq m and 500sq m respectively serve passengers mainly via collaborations with tour operators and hotels. In both lounges, guests can benefit from a concierge service for duty-free shopping anywhere in the terminal and can also order from any F&B point.

TAV Airports and Fraport have co-managed the airport since 2018. In December 2021, the partnership extended their agreement for another 25 years until the end of 2051.

The first phase of development involves an investment of €850 million. The second phase to develop a new international terminal will begin in 2038. Once all phases are complete, capacity will reach over 80 million passengers. ✈
