I’m boxing’s first qualified lawyer, named after Oscar De La Hoya and I hope to follow idol Carl Froch’s footsteps
Oscar McCracken has it all going for him, boxing talent, an incredible nickname and the motivation to reach the top of the sport. Son of former IBO welterweight champion Spencer, and nephew of renowned trainer Rob, it is no wonder McCracken has decided to take up the sweet science. McCracken is a boxer and solicitor destined to follow in Froch’s footsteps But the 25-year-old has not had the normal route into the sport, with no amateur experience instead replaced by a superb education. McCracken completed a law degree at the University of Warwickshire in 2020, and has since been studying for his exams to qualify and practice law as a full-time solicitor. He is now approximately one year away from becoming a qualified full-time solicitor, which would be a true first given he also harbours ambitions of becoming a professional boxer. McCracken also has a new child, and in an interview with talkSPORT.com has revealed how it has been balancing his two careers. He said: “I’ve decided to turn professional, albeit late at the age of 25 so it was a massive delay. “This was due to how long it took to become it because of how long it takes to be a solicitor in this country. “It’s been extremely difficult to manage both sets of careers, but I’m getting it done. “I’ve been working at law firms, getting up in morning and training then finishing work and getting myself into the gym. “Just before my pro debut, my missus said she was pregnant too so it has been busy. “This has never been done but boxing is hot at the minute, and this could be something really big.” GettyMcCracken was named after boxing great De La Hoya[/caption] McCracken has had three professional fights and already has quite the reputation. His nickname ‘Oscar De La Lawyer’ is one of the best in the sport and a real selling point for the future of his career. McCracken was named after boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya whom won world titles in six weight classes. And he has admitted his nickname is a real catch, having had plenty fly around after launching his career. “From the gym there was always nicknames flying around,” he continued. “The one I originally had with judges jury, and executioner. But after a discussion with an individual who was a lawyer, my dad came up with it. He is the nephew of trainer McCracken who worked with JoshuaDave Thompson/Matchroom “He said ‘Oscar De La Lawyer’ and the whole room was in stitches so I knew that was it.” McCracken has been in and amongst boxing royalty growing up. He has watched Anthony Joshua train with his uncle for several years, including before his Olympics glory in the London 2012 Games. The 25-year-old even watched a famous sparring session between Carl Froch and Tony Bellew. But he insists it was Froch he looked up to when he came into the sport. “My idol was Carl Froch. Rob trained him, I went to loads of fights. “He was the man I looked at growing up, wanting to be like him. “I had some unreal experiences coming into the sport, I’ve been lucky to see these fighters up close. “But he is my inspiration more than anyone to be honest.” It is a big chance for McCracken coming into the sport at a time when it is booming. There are a host of promoters he could work with including the likes of Eddie Hearn, Frank Warren and Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh. And his objective is to reach the top but step-by-step. He concluded: “Yeah definitely that will just be a matter of when not if. “You would have seen people same as me who have come from big boxing families jumping on them shows to soon. “I’m getting my experience on the smaller shows and will step up when the time is right. “Because I am studying law, I don’t need to jump at the immediate gratification of a big payday.” Follow talkBOXING on social media talkBOXING is now on Twitter and Facebook.
