‘Idiot take’ – Charles Barkley slams comparisons between Auburn star and Shaq
Charles Barkley wasn’t having anyone being compared to Shaquille O’Neal. The NBA legend and now analyst was quick to shut down comparisons between the former Lakers star and Auburn forward Johni Broome. Johni Broome’s dominance has been compared to Shaquille O’NealGetty Broome has enjoyed a stellar campaign for Auburn in college basketball. His 6-foot-10 and 235 pound build has also enabled him to be one of the most productive big man prospects heading into March Madness. He has been so productive he is on pace to become the first SEC player since 1991 to average 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Such numbers along with his size have prompted immediate comparison to the most dominant player in NBA history, O’Neal. However Barkley, who works with ‘Big Diesel’, dismissed any notion of there being any similarity between the two. “Jojo, anybody who thinks that is stupid” Barkley stated emphatically on the ‘Straight Out of Jungle’ podcast when host Vince mentioned the statistical comparison. “That’s an idiot take. Do not compare Johni Broome to Shaquille O’Neal.” For Barkley, who played for Auburn between 1981 to 1984, the two have a huge difference in the physicality that favours O’Neal and it isn’t even close. “First of all, Shaq is the biggest human being I’ve ever seen in my life. I work with him every week. That’s not a fair comparison,” Barkley added. “You can do the stat thing if you want, but Shaq is one of the most dominant big men in SEC and NBA history.” Shaquille O’Neal was a powerhouse back in his playing daysGetty The forward has enjoyed a strong season for AuburnGetty Despite shutting down the O’Neal comparisons, Barkley still had praise for Broome and his impact at Auburn. “His ability to stretch the floor. He’s added a jump shot to his game, spreading out, posting at 15-20 feet, even to the free throw line. That’s expanded his game” Barkley noted when discussing what impresses him most about the Tigers’ star. “I think he’s a tremendous passer. That’s why Auburn can run their offense through him.” Barkley went further in his praise, claiming that Broome could be the greatest player in Auburn history. “If he can finish this journey, I’d say he’s probably the greatest player in Auburn basketball history. If they win the national championship, I’d put him at the top,” Barkley stated. Ultimately for Broome, he will be focused on establishing his own name in basketball and the 22-year-old is doing just that. Had it not been for Cooper Flagg, Broome would have likely swept the trophies at the college basketball player of the year awards.
