Hurricanes sign goaltender Frederik Andersen to one-year contract extension

The Carolina Hurricanes have secured their goaltending situation for next season.

Frederik Andersen has signed a one-year, $2.75-million contract extension to stay in Carolina, the team announced Saturday.

“Frederik has played extremely well for us and ranks in the top 10 all-time for winning percentage by an NHL goalie,” said Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky in a statement released by the team. “We’re excited that he will be staying with the team for next season.”

Andersen, 35, started 22 games for Carolina this past season, finishing with a 13-8-1 record, 2.50 goals against average, and .899 save percentage.

The 12-year NHL veteran started his career with the Anaheim Ducks, then played five seasons for the Toronto Maple Leafs before signing with Carolina in July 2021 as a free agent.

Andersen was unavailable for 38 consecutive games after undergoing knee surgery in November.

The contract includes performance bonuses of $250,000 for playing 35 games, playing 40 games and making the conference finals if Andersen plays half of the Hurricanes’ playoff games.

It stands to reason that Andersen will split time in the net with 25-year-old Pyotr Kochetkov, who finished fourth in Calder Trophy voting and was voted to the NHL all-rookie team in 2023-24.
