Honda to shift production of Civic Hybrid hatchback from Japan to the US in response to Trump tariffs

According to reports by Bloomberg and CBS News, Honda has said it will move production of its Civic Hybrid hatchback from Japan to the United States in response to president Donald Trump’s 25% tariff on imported cars that came into effect on April 3 this year.

“We are currently dual-sourcing the Civic Hatchback Hybrid from our Indiana Auto Plant and Japan, but beginning later this year it will be produced only in Indiana,” said Chris Abbruzzese, a spokesperson for American Honda Motor Company.

Production of the model began in February this year at Honda’s Yorii plant located in the Saitama prefecture, with the relocation to the Indiana plant set to take place around June or July. The Civic is a popular model in the US that saw 58,976 units sold in Q1 2025, with 20,192 units being hybrid variants – a record quarterly sales.

Honda has a total of 12 production facilities in the US, including in Indiana, Ohio, Alabama and North Carolina. Together, they produce more than two thirds of Honda and Acura models sold in the country, reports Autoweek.
