Harry Kane deserves to be in same company as Lionel Messi – he’s validated £100m Bayern Munich gamble
Harry Kane can be considered on par with Lionel Messi given his scoring success at Bayern Munich. That’s the view of European football expert Andy Brassell after Kane won the first major trophy of his career on Sunday. After missing out on silverware with Tottenham, Kane now has a winner’s medal from a season in which he’s been key to their victory. The 31-year-old is the leading scorer in the Bundesliga with 24 goals and second in the charts across Europe’s top five leagues. Kane has scored 36 in total this season, and Brassell believes that he should be considered on the same level as the legendary Messi. “Kane has had another brilliant season, domestically of course,” he told talkSPORT on Trans Europe Express. “He’s gone past 100 goal involvements for Bayern in less than two seasons, so goals and assists. “He’s currently on 24 in the Bundesliga, seven assists in just 27 starts. That is almost a little bit like, and I’m going to put it in these terms, it’s a little bit like when we talk about the numbers around Leo Messi. “Now of course, Kane is an out and out striker so it’s different, people don’t count him on quite the same level, which I understand. “But, I think he deserves to sort of be in that company, and maybe it’s belatedly because with all due respect to Tottenham, he’s finally joined an elite club that people feel happy or happier framing him in those sorts of terms. “The reality is, he always belonged there and I think coming to Bayern, I mean, this kind of validates it because he came there for a trophy, he also came there to be involved in the Champions League, to be involved in a Champions League contender every single season. “So, whether he plays for Bayern until he’s 39, which I strongly doubt, or whether this just turns out to be three great seasons in the middle of his career, I think Bayern have got what they wanted out of it, and Kane has got what he wanted out of it as well.” Kane has scored 24 goals in Bayern’s Bundesliga title campaignGetty Brassel says he’s in the same company as Messi, who has scored 859 career goalsAFP Kane reached three cup finals with Spurs but never won a trophy, and is also a two-time runner-up at the Euros with England. However, his long wait is now over thanks to his move to Bayern in August 2023, which was worth in excess of £100million. The striker has scored 80 goals and assisted another 22 for the club across his two seasons in Germany. They have come across 89 appearances in all competitions, meaning he averages around 1.2 goal contributions per game. Kane could get his hands on a second trophy this summer as Bayern travel to the United States for the Club World Cup. Vincent Kompany’s side have been grouped with Auckland City, Boca Juniors and Benfica for the revamped tournament. Kane has scored nearly a goal per game at Bayern
