The Cleveland Guardians lost the heart of their lineup in the third inning of Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Third baseman José Ramírez was forced to exit the contest after awkwardly tripping over first base while legging out an infield single. The 32-year-old hit a dribbler out in front of home plate, which was fielded by Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt. The ensuing throw hit Ramírez on the back as he lunged for the bag.
Ramírez immediately went down and was tended to by Cleveland’s training staff before walking off under his own power.
Cleveland said that he suffered a mild right ankle sprain.
The hit was Ramírez’s second of the game.
He entered Friday with five home runs, a .753 OPS and seven stolen bases over the first 30 games of the year.
On Thursday, the six-time all-star became the first third baseman to ever reach 250 career homers and stolen bases.
