Grand National tips: Constitution Hill bids for quick comeback after Cheltenham Festival fall
The Grand National is the biggest jumps race in the world but ahead of the feature race at Aintree there’s a few more top-graded races on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Grand National Festival kicks off on Thursday 3rd April and is capped off with the Grand National itself on Saturday followed by two more races for the seven race card. Thursday sees the Grade 1’s Manifesto Novices’ Chase, Juvenile Hurdle, Aintree Bowl Chase and Aintree Hurdle for a fascinating opening day. Those runners are far from confirmed so the ante-post focus is on the Open Hunters’ Chase with a maximum of 30 runners over 2m5f. Willitgoahead is the big favourite even at this early stage with My Drogo, Famous Clermont and Lifetime Ambition not far behind. Friday hosts the Grade 1’s Franny Blennerhassett Memorial Novices’ Chase, Top Novices’ Hurdle, Melling Chase, Sefton Novices’ Hurdle and the feature Topham Handicap Chase. Only the latter sees the ante-post market ready though and with 61 runners still out of a maximum 30-strong field it is still incredibly wide open. Saturday sees two other Grade 1 races as well as the Grand National, which are: Mersey Novices’ Hurdle and Liverpool Hurdle. One of the biggest stories from this year’s Aintree Festival is the return of Constitution Hill after his Champion Hurdle fall in the 2025 Cheltenham Festival. He was set to go to Punchestown for the Champion Hurdle but trainer Nicky Henderson has revealed he could be back quicker than expected with a bid for the Aintree Hurdle ahead of the Irish tilt. The 2m4f trip should be an easy one for Constitution Hill, he was the clear odds-on favourite at Cheltenham, despite hinting at a drop in form with injury worries and not looking himself he did show in his return that he still has a tonne of ability. If he’s back to anywhere near his 100% and of course takes each hurdle like he usually does he should win nicely. But Lossiemouth and Brighterdaysahead could reappear as rivals as the mares are bidding to prove how good they are. Grand National 2025 odds from talkSPORT BET Aintree Festival tips While most ante-post markets are unavailable at this time there’s still lots of scope to focus on ahead of when the declarations come out. One of the first is the Aintree Bowl Chase at 2.55 on April 3 2025. Over 3m1f it should attract a good quality of stayers. Stage Star is one tipped for a jolt at this contest after impressing greatly with a very encouraging run in the Cotswold Chase against L’Homme Presse. That was his first time over further than 2m5f and it seemed to suit well with his liking to take things up from the front, set a strong honest pace and still have enough to close out. He just got pipped to the post by the ten-year-old which showed Stage Star is certainly unexposed over this trip and could even improve on his second attempt at this distance. The 3.30pm Aintree Hurdle of course goes to Constitution Hill if he does indeed go for a quicker comeback than expected. It seems now there’s no hiding away from these kind of Grade 1’s after now losing his unbeaten tag and Henderson and connections can be comfortable sending him out to more races to show what he’s still capable of and hopefully proving a few wrong.
