Grace Atkinson’s ‘all in each' Solo Exhibition Will Open at Spazio Leone Later This Month

Spazio Leone is set to unveil all in each, a solo exhibition by Paris-based New Zealand textile designer and artist Grace Atkinson. The exhibition opens to the public on Friday, April 25 and runs through May 18. It combines new commissions with existing works in dialogue with historical design pieces from Spazio Leone’s collection. This display creates a dynamic exchange between contemporary textile artistry and timeless design. The exhibition takes its title from Knots by psychologist R.D. Laing, a poetic study of human relationships and entanglements. Atkinson explores the contextual nature of perception by presenting hybrid works that modulate spaces and foster dialogue between functionality and aesthetics. Her works include handwoven and hand-brushed blankets and rugs with disrupted, dynamic motifs, as well as tapestries crafted by enmeshing delicate silk and cotton fibers. She also debuts a modular chair and footstool set that transforms into a sculptural piece. The exhibition also features unique pieces handcrafted with 100% pure virgin wool using a traditional technique developed by the Hutsuls in the 14th century. Each piece is woven on a wooden loom, submerged in a mountain river to gently felt the wool fibers, sun-dried, and then hand-brushed to achieve a soft, fleecy texture. These items are heavy enough to function as rugs yet light enough to serve as blankets. Artisanal details, such as occasional twigs or leaves caught in the fibers and irregular color variations, add to their distinctive charm.Grace Atkinson hails from New Zealand and now works from Paris, where she studies surface, texture and scale in relation to architecture and sensation. She commits to preserving ancient craft techniques and collaborates closely with artisans. Her creations embody the expressive potency of textiles and resonate with sensuous experience, while also bridging traditional methods with contemporary design sensibilities.
