Finau looks to help Los Angeles Golf Club lock up TGL playoff spot

With the playoff picture starting to take shape, TGL has a solid doubleheader Monday night with one of the league’s best teams looking to lock up a spot in the hunt for the SoFi Cup – while two other teams are fighting to stay in the mix.

Also, for the first time in TGL’s young history, a player has signed a one-match contract as Tony Finau will be part of Los Angeles Golf Club’s lineup, with both Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood having pre-existing commitments.

“I’ve watched many of the TGL matches these past six weeks and I’m looking forward to getting a chance to be a part of it and compete. Team golf is always fun and exciting,” Finau said. “Collin, Sahith, Justin and Tommy are great guys that I respect and enjoy being around. I appreciate Los Angeles Golf Club calling me up for this match. I’m excited to get to SoFi Center. The place looks electric, and I can’t wait to see it all first-hand and practice with the team. Monday is going to be a fun night.”

From the outset, TGL was created to be “complementary to player schedules,” which included planned off-weeks. To be eligible for TGL, players must be PGA Tour members in good standing.

Finau, a six-time winner on Tour, should lend a solid hand to the already formidable LAGC lineup.

As far as course setup is concerned, all six players (across both matches) will be getting their first look at Hang Loose, which makes its debut -the 29th of 30 TGL holes to be played this season – as the 578-yard par-5 4th hole.

Here’s everything else you need to know about the two matches happening Monday from the SoFi Center.

    Standings, schedule, results

MATCH 10

Los Angeles Golf Club: Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, Tony Finau (out: Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose) vs. New York Golf Club: Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler (sitting: Xander Schauffele)

NOTES:

• If LAGC wins, they are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. With this – an NYGC loss – The Bay Golf Club would also be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs

• NYGC can, however, not be eliminated with a loss

• Only the top-4 teams make the playoffs.

• NYGC is coming off its first TGL victory, a 10-3 drumming over Jupiter Links GC which moved NYGC from last to 4th in the standings with two matches remaining.

• LAGC has been a team of marked consistency through the inaugural TGL season. It leads TGL in holes won (20), Triples points (16), and is tied for the lead in Singles points (7)

• The big difference will come on the greens in this match. LAGC has made the most short putts (less than 10 feet) in TGL this season and tied for the most medium-distance putts. NYGC has not made a medium-distance putt all season (0-for-15) and ranks last in Average Putt Made

• LAGC has also won seven par 4s this season, the most of any TGL team

• Finau becomes the first “fill-in” player for TGL but will only tee it up for LAGC for Match 10. Finau has had a solid start to his 2025 PGA Tour season and comes into the TGL week off his best-yet finish, a T5 at The Genesis Invitational

• Morikawa is back in action after sitting for LAGC’s last match, an overtime loss to Atlanta Drive GC

• Schauffele continues to be sidelined with a rib injury. He hopes to return to the PGA Tour for the Arnold Palmer Invitational March 6, with the TGL playoffs beginning March 17.

MATCH 11

Boston Common Golf: Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy (sitting: Adam Scott) vs. Atlanta Drive GC: Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay (sitting: Lucas Glover)

NOTES:

• Whereas last week was a potential must-win for Boston Common, this week is indeed a must-win. A loss in regulation does not eliminate Boston from playoff contention but it would require NYGC and Jupiter Links to lose their remaining matches in regulation

• If LAGC wins Match 10, then an Atlanta Drive GC victory clinches a spot in the playoffs with a win over Boston

• Atlanta enters the match in 3rd place in the SoFi Cup standings while Boston Common is 6th

• Like Match 10, a lot of the momentum will come on the green if Boston is to top Atlanta Drive. Boston is second in TGL in both driving accuracy and greens in regulation but has made only 34 percent of its putts inside 30 feet – whereas Atlanta Drive has made almost double that

• In Singles, be sure to keep an eye on McIlroy vs. Cantlay, who had a memorable dust-up in the 2023 Ryder Cup.

SCORING EXPLANATION VIA TGL

Modern Match Play

  • Each hole has a value of 1 point and the team with the fewest shots on a hole wins the point.
  • Ties are worth 0 points and there are no carryovers
  • The Hammer (NEW) – Each hole is worth 1 point unless a team throws the Hammer. Each team will begin the match with three Hammers. Playing the Hammer raises the stakes of a hole by one point when played and accepted. Teams can only throw the Hammer once on a given hole but are otherwise free to use them at any point in the match to up the ante. The maximum number of points on offer per hole is now 3 (should each team throw a Hammer that is accepted by their opponent). The new rules mean each team will always get the opportunity to throw the Hammer during a match.
  • The team with the most points wins the match
  • Each match will be played until all 15 holes are completed, even if the match outcome has been decided. A team’s total number of holes won will be used as a tiebreaker in the SoFi Cup Standings at the end of the regular season.

Format/Sessions

  • Sessions
  • Within a match there will be two sessions played in two different formats
  • Triples – 9 holes – Three players per team competing in an alternate-shot format.
  • Singles– 6 holes– One-on-one, head-to-head competition for the entire hole. Each player from each team plays a total of two full holes during the session.
  • Overtime – If the match is tied after 15 holes, the teams will play a best-of-three, closest-to-the-pin competition to decide the winner. This will be similar to penalty kicks in soccer.
  • The hole location and orientation of the green will remain unchanged from the final/15th hole of the match.
  • The shot distance will be between 25-50 yds and decided pre-match by our match official.  All players will play from the same spot. The ball must finish on the putting surface to be eligible.

SoFi Cup Standings

  • Similar to the NHL, TGL presented by SoFi will use a points-based system for the SoFi Cup Standings.
  • For each match, teams can be awarded up to 2 points towards their regular-season total based on the following:
  • Win in regulation = 2 points
  • Win in overtime = 2 points
  • Loss in overtime = 1 point
  • Loss in regulation = 0 points
