Emma Raducanu explains why doctor had to intervene in defeat to Jessica Pegula

Emma Raducanu required on-court medical attention after she complained of feeling ‘really dizzy’ and ‘faint’. The Brit looked visibly unwell during her 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 6-2 quarter-final defeat to Jessica Pegula amid the sweltering conditions at the Miami Open as temperatures rose to 27C. Raducanu’s quarter-final bid took a speed bump when she needed medical attentionGetty It came to a head midway through the second set, which Raducanu led 5-2 after dropping the first set 4-6. A doctor assessed Raducanu during the change of ends as the 22-year-old had her vitals checked while another medics placed ice on her legs and back to help bring down her temperature. “I just felt really dizzy,” Raducanu said. “I felt faint. I don’t know. “It was very humid out there and we have a long wait, so maybe just an accumulation [of things], and just physical points as well and there were long rallies and heavy conditions. “I don’t know how I kind of regrouped in that second set, but in the third I definitely struggled a little bit.” Thankfully, Raducanu was able to play on following the doctor’s on-court visit. Unfortunately the 2021 US Open champion had lost the momentum that propelled her to a 5-2 lead as Pegula fought back to force a tiebreak in the second set. But Raducanu managed to kick back into gear just in time as she took the tiebreak 7-3. Sadly for Raducanu she could not build on taking the second set as No. 4 seed Pegula dominated the third to book a spot in the semi-finals in the Sunshine State. Although she lost, Raducanu’s performance in Miami was her best since the 2021 US OpenGetty Despite the defeat, Raducanu’s charge in Miami marked her best performance at a tournament since her triumphant run at Flushing Meadows. Raducanu had previously only reached the second round in Miami. Pegula, who will now face teenage giant slayer Alexandra Eala in the final four, heaped praise on Raducanu’s performance. “It was tough,” Pegula said. “I played a good first set, a little let down in the second, got it back, went up 2-0 in the tiebreak, but it kind of flipped. “She started moving the ball really well, serving good… sometimes it just happens, but I just wanted to come out in the third really strong, really quick, and just kind of jump on her and not keep the third set too close.” Pegula will now take on the teenager who upset Iga Swiatek in the semi-finalsGetty Thanks to Raducanu’s exploits in Miami, she is poised to return back to the top 50 in the WTA rankings following the tournament. Had Raducanu reached the semi-final, she would have surpassed Katie Boulter to become the British No. 1 again. The 22-year-old lost her status as British No.1 in June 2023 when she was overtaken by Boulter, who has held it ever since. Raducanu’s highest career ranking was at 10 in 2022, which was boosted by the 2000 points received by players for winning a Grand Slam.
