EFL club set to sack third manager in 12 months after narrowly avoiding relegation

Hull City will confirm Ruben Selles has been sacked today [Thursday], talkSPORT understands. Selles is the third manager to be dismissed by owner Acun Ilicali in the last 12 months, following Liam Rosenior and Tim Walter. Selles is set to be sacked by HullGetty Ilicali held an end of season review in Turkey this week where the decision was made to move in a new direction. He was unhappy with a run of two wins in their last nine games when the Tigers were fighting to stay up. Hull scraped Championship survival by goal difference with a 1-1 draw away at Portsmouth on a dramatic final day. Selles made his debut in English football with Southampton in 2022 by joining as assistant to Ralph Hasenhuttl. The Spaniard then became interim boss when Hasenhuttl was sacked in November 2022 before Nathan Jones was appointed. Jones spent three months at the club before departing, with Selles then taking temporary charge of the side again afterwards. Southampton made him their permanent manager until the end of the 2022/23 season but did not renew his contract that summer. Selles then joined Reading in League One for a season-and-a-half before jumping up into the Championship with Hull. The 41-year-old is now set to become the latest dismissal at the MKM Stadium following Rosenior and Walter. Rosenior in particular has impressed since his exit, with the former Tigers defender now the head coach at Strasbourg in Ligue 1. Hull are now looking for their fourth manager in the space of a yearREX Strasbourg are sixth with one game remaining and still in contention to qualify for the Champions League third qualifying round. However, Ilicali recently told talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook that he didn’t regret parting ways. “I have zero doubts about the decision,” he said. “I want to mention something, I think Liam is a top coach and he’s a good friend of mine. “Even this week, we talked to him and we talked to him almost every month. “When he was leaving us, I said Liam will be a big coach and I’m sure that he will develop and be fantastic. Already he’s doing so many good things.”
