The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project has now reached a progress rate of 81.07%, and the alignment from Kota Baru to Selangor is on track for completion by December 2026, Bernama has reported. This rail project has reached 90% completion in Terengganu, and 86% in Pahang, according to the report.

The Kelantan government has played an important role in ensuring the project is implemented smoothly, especially in resolving issues related to land acquisition, said Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) CEO Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak.

“The work progress of the 43 km alignment in Kelantan has achieved 88.86%, contributing significantly to the progress of the overall project. The testing and commissioning process is expected to begin in June 2026. Track laying works have also shown positive developments, with significant progress achieved in Kelantan, Terengganu and parts of Pahang involving the 400 km alignment from Tunjong, Kota Baru, to Maran in Pahang,” Darwis said.

Meanwhile, construction of two ECRL stations in Kelantan – in Tunjong and Pasir Puteh – have reached 69% and 68% completion, respectively. Work on both stations are expected to be complete by May 2026, the MRL CEO said.

In February, second finance minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan has said that the first phase of the ECRL (Kota Bharu-Gombak Integrated Terminal) will commence testing and certification in June 2026 before operations are expected to start in January 2027. The second phase, from Gombak to Port Klang is expected to be complete by December 2027 for start of operations in January 2028, MRL CEO Darwis said.

The East Coast Rail Link project spans 665 km and will traverse the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia including Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, connecting them with Selangor on the west coast of the peninsula.
