A soccer club in the Netherlands is honouring the Canadian military on the 80th anniversary of that country’s liberation during the Second World War.
A soccer club in the Netherlands is honouring the Canadian military on the 80th anniversary of that country’s liberation during the Second World War.
SC Cambuur, which competes in the Dutch Second Division, unveiled on Tuesday new kits that honour the Royal Canadian Dragoons. The Dragoons played a major role in liberating the Netherlands from Axis power rule, including the city of Leeuwarden where SC Cambuur is based.
The kits feature red maple leaves on the front and the insignia of the Dragoons on the back.
The team also shared a video featuring the voice of veteran Jim Parks, who, at age 100, is the last surviving member of the Dragoons who fought in the Netherlands during World War II.
“I really appreciate the gesture by SC Cambuur to play in these Canadian shirts,” Parks says in the video. “To remember and honour those who fought for our freedom. Because that’s something we should never take for granted.”
