In a move that solidifies his leadership over one of motorsport’s most prestigious entities, Stefano Domenicali has been confirmed to remain as president and CEO of Formula One Management (FOM) for an additional five years.
The announcement, made by Liberty Media – the commercial rights holder of the Formula 1 championship – extends Domenicali’s tenure through the 2029 season, ensuring continuity at the top during a transformative period for the sport.
The Italian executive, who first took the reins at the start of 2021, has overseen a remarkable resurgence in Formula 1’s popularity and financial stability, earning widespread praise from stakeholders and fans alike.
Domenicali’s journey to this extension is rooted in a rich motorsport legacy.
A former Ferrari F1 team principal from 2008 to 2013, he later transitioned to executive roles at Audi and Lamborghini before stepping into the FOM leadership position.
His appointment in 2021 made him the second CEO under Liberty Media’s ownership of F1’s commercial rights, following Chase Carey, after the American media giant acquired the sport in 2017.
Now, with this new five-year commitment, Domenicali is poised to guide Formula 1 through an era of significant regulatory changes and global expansion.
A Continued Commitment to Formula One
Domenicali expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the new contract extension in a statement released by FOM:
“I am honoured to continue to lead this incredible sport, which I love and has been part of my life since my childhood and grateful to the Liberty Media team for their trust,” he said.
“Together, with all the relevant F1 stakeholders, we will continue to serve the best interest of our fans, as they are the heartbeat of everything we do.
“The passion, the energy and the adrenaline are the fuel that powers me every day to give my absolute best to Formula 1.”
His continued leadership comes as Formula One prepares to enter the 2026 season with new chassis and engine design regulations. Domenicali’s vision and drive will play a pivotal role as the sport navigates this transformative period.
Liberty Media’s Endorsement
Domenicali’s position appeared secure even after former Liberty Media chief Greg Maffei stepped down at the end of 2024, with new president and CEO Derek Chang expressing full confidence in Domenicali’s leadership.
Chang’s endorsement puts to rest any speculation that Domenicali might leave F1 to pursue opportunities in MotoGP, following Liberty’s acquisition of the motorcycle championship last year.
In the same statement, Chang praised Domenicali’s impact and ongoing contribution to the sport:
“On behalf of Liberty, we are thankful for his partnership and incredibly optimistic about the continued success the F1 team can drive for the sport, our fans, partners and shareholders.”
Domenicali’s commitment to Formula One solidifies the sport’s leadership as it continues to expand its global presence and embrace new technologies.
With the 2025 season kicking off at the Australian Grand Prix this weekend, fans and teams alike can look forward to a competitive and exciting championship under Domenicali’s steady guidance.
